How did you become a feminist?
As a child I already felt like 'hey, why couldn't boy play with dolls? Why couldn't I play outside?' My dad treated me as a boy until I was six or so, but then my mum decided that it was not right.
I continued to play with my friends (all boys) on school and nothing really important happened. My mum ignored the fact that all my friends were boys - as long as I didn't play with them after school.
When I was 12 or so (that's the first year of secundary school in here, I don't know how schools are organised in other countries) I got interested in feminism again, and soon became a Riot Grrrl.
My mum doesn't really care, she ignores it. She's an seventies-feminist but in some way she hates it that I have become a feminist too. Maybe because I'm a different type of feminist. My mum showed that she was proud to be a woman by acting as much male-like, I show that I am proud to be a woman to act like a woman.
How did you become a feminist and riot grrrl? And how did your parents - especially your mum - react?
