What is riot grrrl?
Riot grrrl is a feminist movement that has her roots in punk and alternative rock music. Riot grrrls are militant feminists who try to make the world a more female-friendly place. We don't want to castrate men, we're not all lesbians and we're certainly not anti-sex. We just want to be treated equally to men. Most of us are pro-choice (i.e. legal abortus) . I say 'we' because that's easier, but of course within the Riot Grrrl Movement there are lots of girls who have other ideas about what riot grrrl is. I think no one can really give a good discription of riot grrrl; there are too many different types of grrrls.
There's no central 'organisation' of Riot Grrrls, but it's quite organised. There are collectives and chapters and 'national' and international organisations. That's kind of a mess, because I know that my country (the Netherlands) has at least 2 national organisations.
Everyone can be a riot grrrl, you don't have to dress at a special way, or go to certain events or be tested or anything like that. You are a riot grrrl if you feel like one. You don't have to join a collective or chapter.
Or, as wikipedia describes it:
"Riot grrrl (or riot grrl) is a form of hardcore punk rock music, known for its militant feminist stance. The genre first appeared in the early 1990s as an offshoot of alternative rock and punk music and as a response to prevalent attitudes of punk machismo, building also on a history of all-women bands. A key factor in this movement was the support for girls not needing to be musically trained to start a band. "
The Oxford English Dictionary says: "feminist resistance to male domination in society and especially to the abuse and harassment of women."
I personally like the Oxford description most. If you have questions about Riot Grrrl in general, see the Riot Grrrl - board.
